No further probe into morale of Wiltshire Council staff

Wiltshire Times: No further probe into morale of Wiltshire Council staff No further probe into morale of Wiltshire Council staff

Wiltshire Council will conduct no further inquiries into staff morale despite calls for a review.

Independent councillor Jeff Osborn led calls for a probe after 252 redundancies were announced last year while bosses were given pay rises of up to 16 per cent.

Leader Jane Scott rejected the calls at Tuesday’s oversight and scrutiny committee blaming any low morale on outside criticism of the council and political infighting.

She said: “I talk to more staff than anybody and they are fed up with this council being pulled apart in the press and with councillors criticising their work.

“Officers feel it’s not good enough when they get constant niggles.

“We are very good at throwing bricks, but not good at giving bouquets.”

Liberal Democrat leader Jon Hubbard said sickness rates among staff were falling, showing that morale was getting better.

He added: “We don’t want to create a spiral of decline where we are telling our staff their morale is getting worse.”

If staff morale was high no one would be discussing it.

If staff morale is low, saying that it is not will not improve it and is likely to make it lower

You mean your senior staff are upset that the public WON'T accept your pathetic, inadequate explanations regarding recent, seriously questionable decisions?
Because you sure as heck aren't talking about the majority of your workforce - whom you refrain from acknowledging on a daily basis! You have NO connection or empathy with the majority of hard-working staff.
If you're not in one of the various the council elite "top-floor" clubs - you simply don't count.
Be interesting to see what kind of flannel is trotted out when selections/elections are next looming. How many vagrants, good causes, filled potholes, mown lawns, babies and puppies will be selected for photo-shoots?

Well, since they're reposting the article without the comments, I'll repost my comments on the original one.

I did think the Gazette was doing a valuable job in standing up to this lot. Now I'm starting to have second thoughts. 'Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.'

This is just par for the course from Jane Scott. I've worked for the Council for more than 10 years, I've seen valued colleagues forced into redundancy, their work they've done dismissed as unnecessary, while those still left in their jobs have to do more and more work, become more and more stressed, and the services the Council provides are far worse as a result. She and her fellow Tories are expert at putting a positive spin on everything, but speak to any employees and you get a completely different story. We're fed up with being treated as morons, our valid concerns dismissed, having to apologize to the public for the inferior service we're providing and above all we're tired of being lied to. Inside her cosy, expenses-paid bubble, all is well in Jane Scott's world. We who know better beg to differ. Please, vote this shower out of office at the next election!

County Hall have effecftively closed this issue down by refusing to have an independent survey on staff morale. Instead they used out of date council generated statistics which many claim to be suspect. Most people I know at County Hall say that with yet more redundancies to come, increased work loads and growing inequalities in income levels, morale is far from good.

It's not just the smug, self satisfied leader and her magic circle posing as the cabinet you should get rid of, but the rest of the Tory Councillors who block voted everything through! They should all pay the price for her crap leadership and miss use of public money. The very site of her makes me angry so the sooner the old bag is got rid of the better.

Think this is harsh well I don't care the Tory led administration is not doing Wiltshire any favours at all.

Well done "gingin" for your brave and honest Post...the REAL workers at County Hall are much appreciated and like us Residents, having to put up with the appalling Political obsessions of Jane Scott and her "enterage"..

Lets all hope and Pray that the Meeting at County Hall on Tuesday 4th February 2014 will show Ms Scott the REAL People of Wiltshire are "not for turning" ??

In 2014, Jane Scott is seemingly now embarking on "personal speaking visits" at Area Board Meetings where she is going to apparently speak about the "Legacy for Wiltshire" !!??...

The "legacy" we all have of her massive overspending and then cuts in Services IS the ONLY Legacy that we all have to get stopped..

I would respectfully remind Ms Scott that these days most of us have no choice but to live from day to day..

What is more important in Wiltshire right now is that she is made FULLY accountable for WHY she has brought our County down to its knees because of her obsessive Politics ?

There is absolutely NO need (as such...) for Ms Scott to "look into staff morale" in that she ALREADY knows the cruel impact her Staff cuts have made...

There IS a need for her to accept that she IS a massive contributor and causer to and of cuts that SHE has sanctioned for ALL the wrong reasons..

Even if Ms Scott "produced a staff survey", I doubt very much it would find it's way into Resolution in favour of the Staff that are left to do the REAL work at County Hall and other Offices ?

Pleas come to the Meeting at County Hall on Tuesday 4th February 2014 at 10.30 am and show your Support for the Real people of Wiltshire and the REAL workers at County Hall ?
