Trowbridge firefighters paid silent tribute to former colleague Hugh Cook before his funeral on Wednesday.

Mr Cook, 70, who died on March 21, worked at Trowbridge Fire Station for 24 years, retiring in 1989.

Mr Cook, who lived in Trowbridge with his wife Diane, was a popular figure at the station and staff from the base, in Hilperton Road, stood to attention as his hearse drove by en route to West Wiltshire Crematorium.

Station Manager Richard Humphrey said: “Hugh was a firefighter and this is something we always try and do to honour former colleagues.”

Former Wiltshire fire chief John Craig, who attended Mr Cook’s funeral, said Mr Cook provided great service to the region.

He said: “Hughie Cook was never so happy as when he was helping others, which is why he was such a valuable member of the fire service.

“He was great company and a man with a generosity of spirit.”
