Thousands of visitors from across the country descended on Lacock this weekend for the annual scarecrow trail over the three days of the Bank Holiday weekend.

The popular trail, which is organised by the friends of Lacock Primary School had a round-the-world theme, with different countries represented by each of the displays around the National Trust village.

Friends’ association chairman Chris Chappell said: “Saturday was a washout, but Sunday was busy, and Monday also went really well.

“This year we have done extra things with the tombola and barbecue, so that’s hopefully raising a bit more funds.

“The school’s looking to update some of its technology this year, to get iPads and things for the children, as well as improving the back playground and the toilets.

“I just want to say a special thanks to all the staff and volunteers who helped make this all possible.”

Among those deciphering the scarecrows and identifying all the countries represented on the trail were Kelly Parker and her five-year-old son James.

She said: “We usually come and do it every year. He really loves it, he just keeps running on ahead trying to find the next one.

“We live in Melksham, so it’s not too far for us.

“It’s enjoyable, a nice day out, and it helps towards the school, which is really important.”

Many of the village’s shops, pubs and cafes were also proving popular with visitors. Steve Clarke travelled from north Somerset with his sons Theo and Nathan.

He said: “It’s been a lovely day out, there are plenty of good local crafts in the shops to investigate, and the trail is really good for the kids.”
