Former England cricket captain David Gower paid a visit to the Help for Heroes Recovery Centre where he met servicemen, women and veterans who have been wounded, injured or sick in service.

He was joined by British Airways pilots and ground crew who were delighted to see the ‘Speed Bird’ room they generously donated to Help for Heroes last year, directly contributing to the recovery of those who have suffered life-changing injuries.

The room at Tedworth House, Tidworth, is a ‘first class cabin’ that allows residents to have a moment to themselves and reflect on their recovery.

David said: “Tedworth House is an extraordinary facility, and every penny has been well spent to support our wounded. There is a lot of support behind the House which we need to continue.”

Watched by David, the H4H Cricket for Heroes team then took to the pitch at Tidworth Garrison Oval for a friendly match against the BA pilots and ground crew.

A spokesman said: “It’s been an uplifting and incredibly positive day; we were delighted to be invited.

“It’s an honour to be involved and to meet these inspirational guys – which we never normally would in our line of work.

"We’d like to think that this could become an annual event between H4H and British Airways.”

Cricket for Heroes is a team of Help for Heroes beneficiaries who are using cricket and the camaraderie of sport as part of their recovery, helping them to overcome life-changing injuries and illnesses.

Alan McClelland, of Help for Heroes, said: “Some new friendships were formed and there are plans for many more games in the future. All in all, it was an amazing day with some great cricket played on both sides.”
