Wiltshire Police have successfully backed a national campaign which aimed to clamp down on drink and drug driving.

The Association of Chief Police Officers launched their month-long summer drink and drug drive campaign on June 1.

In total, almost 400 drivers in the county were made to carry out breath tests during the month of June. Of those, 70 tests were either positive, refused or the person failed to provide.

Seven drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink and/or drug driving.

Wiltshire Police, alongside colleagues from Avon & Somerset and Gloucestershire Police, increased their roadside enforcement throughout June in a determined effort to catch those drivers who ignore the warnings.

The campaign – which this year was focused on younger drivers and those staying up late to watch the World Cup – was designed to raise awareness of the serious consequences of being caught drink or drug driving.

Penalties could include a minimum 12-month driving ban, a £5,000 fine and a criminal record.

Inspector Steve Cox, Head of Roads Policing, said: “We’re pleased that we have been able to reinforce our main message – if you take a chance on drink or drug driving, you will be caught.

“By getting behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substances, you are putting both yourself and other road users in serious danger of harm.

“It is important to point out that our efforts to clamp down on drink and/or drug driving do not stop here.

“We are committed to making Wiltshire’s roads as safe as we possibly can and will continue to proactively seek those who attempt to drive while under the influence.

“I’d like to thank the public for their support throughout the campaign.”
