Bellefield Primary and Nursery School’s international curriculum has been recognised by the British Council with a prestigious award.

The Trowbridge school received the Full International School Award for its work to embed internationalism in the curriculum.

At nursery level, 41 per cent of pupils have English as an extra language, so the school was determined to teach a variety of cultures.

Bellefield Primary, headed by multi-lingual head teacher Steve Wigley, has built links with schools in France and Sri Lanka.

Teacher Ellen Campbell said: “We worked hard to embed internationalism into the curriculum, ensuring that children from all cultures and backgrounds are celebrated.”

The school has run a number of activities throughout the year including a celebration of European Languages Day in September.

Plans are already in place for World Book Day in March 2015.

The award lasts for three years at which point the school must reapply for accreditation. The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.

The award was created to encourage links between schools around the world, for schools to teach pupils about other countries and cultures, and enhance teaching standards by sharing best practice.

Accreditation is granted when a school meets the five criteria; international policy, activities, language learning, reach and recording impact.
