A fire investigation will be carried out today into what caused the blaze at the apetitio factory in Trowbridge yestereday.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to the factory, on the Canal Road Industrial Estate, at 2pm yesterday after fire broke out in one of its units.

At the height of the blaze, eight fire crews were mobilised to the scene – two from Trowbridge, two from Warminster, and one each from Bradford on Avon, Melksham, Westbury and Frome.

There were also two aerial appliances, from Bath and Swindon, an incident command vehicle from Devizes and a water carrier from Pewsey.

Crews remained at the scene for the rest of the day, with the incident being declared over at 10.24pm.

The fire affected a 30m x 40m building of sandwich panel construction, and nine breathing apparatus wearers used three main jets and two hose reel jets to fight the flames.

Firefighters also used an aerial appliance to access the building’s roof and cut away sections, so that smoke could be ventilated and the fire fought from above.

The affected part of the apetito site was safely evacuated and nobody was injured. Adjacent businesses, including Airsprung, were also evacuated by Wiltshire Police as a precaution but that cordon was removed during the evening.

Because of the thick black smoke rising from the site in the early stages of the fire, Wiltshire Council carried out air quality monitoring to check that there was no risk to local people.

This testing showed no concerns about particulate pollution, and the advice to keep doors and windows closed has been lifted.
