More than 100 Community Speed Watch volunteers took part in an operation to deter speeding drivers on Tuesday.

Roadside speed checks were made at 40 places across Wiltshire and Swindon with the CSW, Roads Policing Unit and Neighbourhood Policing teams working together.

As part of Wiltshire Police’s Operation Harness, countywide 208 vehicles were found to be speeding. 147 were stopped, with 132 drivers given warnings about their speed.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Paul Mills working alongside volunteers in Seend on the A361 High Street, said: “Doing these speed checks is an essential part to policing and we are always actively looking for more volunteers.

“It is very visible at deterring people from speeding and it is definitely having a positive impact.

“Hopefully this will leave a significant and lasting effect.”

Speedwatch volunteers also took part – Chief Constable, Pat Geenty, Police, Crime Commiss- ioner for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson and Head of Crime Prevention Superintendent Marion Deegan.

Volunteer John Walley, who has been part of the CSW in Seend for more than three months, said: “It seems to be making a difference as the number of drivers we catch is reducing. It’s useful having the police here as they show us ways we can improve. It’s nice to know they take an interest in what we are doing.”
