FORMER South West Wiltshire Labour candidate George Aylett is confident Jeremy Corbyn is the right man to become Prime Minister and believes no seat is unwinnable looking ahead to the 2020 general election.

The left-wing leader secured 251,417 votes (59.5%) in the race for the Labour leadership earlier this month, defeating Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall.

Mr Aylett, who achieved 6,948 votes in the battle to be MP for the South West this year – an improvement of more than 1,300 votes compared to the previous election – believes Mr Corbyn’s policies match his own.

He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon that he [Jeremy Corbyn] got it, I was campaigning for him because a lot of things that I campaigned on for a very long time such as being against a rise in tuition fees and a living wage, he supports.

“He is a coherent alternative to austerity but unfortunately the majority of the Labour Party just don’t get this message.

“I’ve backed him from day one, I didn’t think he was going to win but I’m delighted he has.”

Mr Corbyn was born in Chippenham in 1949 after his father David, who was an electrical engineer, was dispatched to Wiltshire during the Second World War.

The youngest of four brothers, he has been MP for Islington North since 1983.

And Mr Aylett believes that despite the South West Wiltshire constituency being under Conservative control for a number of years, there is every chance Labour could claim the seat in the next general election.

Mr Aylett added: “I think Jeremy Corbyn’s plan for the economy and policies will speak to people in Wiltshire because they will benefit small businesses.

“There is no such thing as an unwinnable seat although it would be a Herculean challenge to get the South West Wiltshire seat, but you can never say never.

“We’ve seen a massive increase in the number of people joining the Labour Party recently, not only in Wiltshire but across the country, which is absolutely unbelievable.

“I just want to see more people involved in politics because I think that’s good and I strongly believe in the Labour Party behind Jeremy Corbyn.”
