STUDENTS at Stonar School, Atworth, have been treated to a workshop with Bath artist, Helen Garrett, who shared her journey to her latest Secret Joy exhibition, taking them through the process that culminated in The Secret Joy solo exhibition at Twenty Twenty Gallery in Shropshire last April.

Beginning with the original inspiration, Helen explained the research, collecting materials and creating sketchbooks, then selecting paint to make final artworks.

Pupils joined in a sensory practical session where they were taught to observe and explore natural forms closely.

Helen explained the importance of bringing all their senses, as well as imagination, into play and using a variety of techniques to develop their understanding with the goal of producing better artworks.

Pupils handled a collection of natural objects and then chose one, working on charcoal and ink drawings, using natural charcoal and feather quills.

Helen Garrett commented: “I am fascinated with all the levels of life that play out at once and the expansiveness of the human imagination.

"It was a pleasure to share my inspiration with Stonar pupils and I was impressed by their receptiveness and the sensitivity of their work .”

An exhibition of Helen’s work has been on display in the sixth form centre this month.
