TWO adrenaline junkies from Devizes have conquered a scolding Firewalk at Dorothy House, Bradford on Avon, raising almost £400 for the charity.

Wiltshire Council adult care and social workers Catherine Drage, of Edward Road, and Jill Simmonds, of Jump Farm, dashed across 500 degrees coals last Thursday (November 19).

To prepare for the scorching feat, the 40 or so participants underwent a motivational session to prepare them for the daunting task and the pair completed the challenge unscathed.

“Not only did we survive it, we raised £383.44. It was brilliant to do and a lot of fun,” said Mrs Drage. “It was a very hot and tingly feeling but luckily it was over quickly. “ “We were dreading it before, me more than Jill. I remember thinking, ‘Why have we done this?’ but after doing it I wouldn’t mind doing this again.”

Mrs Simmonds said she was rather worried before the event as the coals kept rising to dangerously high levels due to gusts of winds for which they had to wait to subside and cool.

“It was definitely worth it, scary but worth it,” she said. “Dorothy House put on a wonderful evening, I really enjoyed it.”

On November 9, Mrs Drage was invited to speak about the event and her previous fundraising efforts on the lunch time BBC Radio Wiltshire show with Graham Seaman in Swindon and then again via a phone call at her home the day after the firewalk.

“I was very nervous as I was live on air for 10 minutes,” said Mrs Drage.

“You don’t know what you will be asked or say. The day after the event I spoke about how it all went live from my home. It was an absolute privilege to be asked.”
