THOSE with a flair for history are being asked to travel back in time and volunteer to help in Stourhead and open the newly restored King Alfred’s Tower.

The triangular folly, which stands at 160ft and is Grade I listed, recently received a funding award of £96,000 which was given to the National Trust for the restoration of the tower.

Designed by Henry Flitcroft for Henry Hoare II in the 1760s, it is built on the site where King Alfred is believed to have rallied his troops before going on to defeat the Danes at the Battle of Ethundon (Edington) in Wiltshire in May 878.

“King Alfred’s Tower is such a special place for so many people,” said Leanne Clements, visitor and volunteer experience manager.

“We know that the tower holds wonderful memories for so many, and we are searching for more volunteers to help us continue to open it so that so more visitors can enjoy the place and even more memories can be created.”

A team of volunteers are being sought to open the tower, which is made from 1.2million bricks, on weekends and bank holidays.
