A MAN was rescued yesterday evening in Holt from the roof of his car after disregarding flood warning signs and getting stuck in flood water.

Wiltshire Fire and Rescue were called at 6.55pm to Holt Cut after the driver's grey BMW was stuck in three feet of water.

The man, who was later treated by medics for hypothermia, took refuge on top of his car and was on his own for an hour before being rescued.

Signs had been placed on the B3105 Staverton Causeway warning of flooding following the impact of Storm Imogen.

Watch manager at Trowbridge Fire Station Guy Tadman warned against ignoring the warning signs.

"We are here to save lives so this wasn't a waste of our time but we would prefer that they didn't put themselves in that dangerous position in the first place," said Mr Tadman, one of five firefighters on the scene.

"Obviously the flooding is annual these days because of these repeated problems.

"We have asked the council to put up flood barriers for the three entrances to the flood plain but time and time again but they have done nothing.

"This hasn't happened and we get this every year."

The rescue was further complicated by the deep and fast flowing water being up to the windows of the car.

"The issue with that area is that there is no phone signal in that dip. He was only spotted because of his car lights but he was there for over an hour," said Mr Tadman.

"People always make the same mistake in that area, it is one that is prone to flooding."

The man's car has now been completely written off.
