LITERARY enthusiasts were able to celebrate the fine words of William Shakespeare at Trowbridge Library on Saturday to mark 400 years since his death.

Bookworms turned out in force for the event which held a number of activities throughout the day at County Hall.

First, kids were given the opportunity to create Tudor ink and write by quill with Trowbridge Museum as well as take part in a fancy dress competition.

Basil Nankivell, community librarian said: “The whole day was really good. We had a lovely response and a couple of volunteers from the museum came over to the library to demonstrate quill writing.

“We put ink out to show people what the writing would have looked like back then and the kids were able to come and have a go in writing their name, or a quote in Shakespearean style.

“People were also able to dress up if they wanted to as well. Shakespeare is a funny thing for people because may get excited about it but in terms of people coming into the library for Shakespeare is different. There was a nice vibe in the library and people were interested and pleased that we were doing Shakespearean-themed things.”

Fans of the Stratford-Upon-Avon playwright also had their knowledge of his work tested to see if they could tell the difference between the quotes of Shakespeare, Lady Gaga, Batman or other famous people.

Other libraries in Wiltshire followed suit and all invited visitors to take a 'Shakespeare Selfie' with their favourite quote from the famous playwright.

Mr Nankivell added: “It was a celebration of Shakespeare and his importance shouldn’t be underestimated and that is why we felt we had to do something to celebrate.

“From my perspective, it was lovely to see people enjoying the library.”
