PUPILS from Warminster School took part in a charity day to help raise awareness and money for a charity in Uganda set up by the one of school's house tutors.

On Sunday (May 15) 14 girls from Ivy House followed a day in the life of a girl in Uganda for Fiona Beach-MacGeagh's charity by going for a three-mile walk at 6am, eating a bowl of porridge and hand-washing their clothes, as girls in St Michael's School in Uganda do every day.

The charity, set up by Miss Beach-MacGeagh on her gap year, looks after 50 orphans at the school and feeds them a bowl of porridge each day to give them the energy to continue learning.

Miss Beach-MacGeagh said: "The girls came up with the idea at register one morning after hearing about the lives of the girls in Uganda.

"They not only raised money but also gained a deep understanding of what the girls at St Michael's go through. It was so nice seeing them enjoying conversations with each other without the distraction of technology.

"They are still talking about how much they enjoyed the day so hopefully those memories will stay with them for a long time. They even enjoyed the 6am walk which surprised me.

"I'm extremely proud of everyone who took part, it was a brilliant day."

African drumming and bead making were also involved in the day.

The day finished at 4pm with a barbecue to celebrate the achievements of the 14 girls who took part, which included going a whole day without mobile phones or electricity.
