ONE Melksham resident is supporting a national campaign which encourages people to donate their time to good causes.

Christine Clarke has been helping at the new Barnardo’s shop on Verbana Court, behind the Water Meadow restaurant, since it first opened at the end of February.

The 69-year-old comes in for a morning and an afternoon each week to lend a hand with a variety of tasks and she enjoys it so much that she is supporting national Volunteers’ Week which begins on June 1.

Mrs Clarke only moved to Melksham 18 months ago in order to be closer to her family. She said: “I didn’t want to stay indoors, and I thought volunteering would be a good way to get to know people.

“I’d never done any voluntary work before but the new Barnardo’s shop was almost on my doorstep so it was the obvious choice.

“I help with sorting, steaming and pricing the donations and then putting them out on display.

“There’s a really nice atmosphere and we all get on well together. I always look forward to my days in the shop.

“I’ve now got to know some of the regular customers and it gives me something else to talk about when I get home.”

National Volunteers' Week was created to celebrate the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK.

Area business manager Emma King said: “Christine was the first person to register as a volunteer when we opened and we’re delighted that she enjoys it so much.

“It’s a great way to meet new people, make new friends and learn new skills, as well as helping to fundraise for a very worthy cause.

“We sincerely appreciate every hour which people can spare.”

The Barnardo’s shop is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm and Sunday from 10am-4pm.
