AVID horse fan Alfie Waker is ready to complete his fourth fundraising activity by jumping into the Portishead Quay Marina, Bristol, before being rescued by dogs.

The 11-year-old has done three fundraising activities in the past to raise money for HorseWorld, including a sponsored abseil and a bike ride from the Wadworth brewery in Devizes to HorseWorld’s site in Bristol.

Alfie will be joined by his seven-year-old brother Charlie on the jump, making it the first fundraising event they will take on together.

Mum Hayley, of Matravers Close, Westbury, said: “Alfie has followed HorseWorld since he was five. He read a story in the Wiltshire Times about Tom, the Wadworth shire horse, who went to HorseWorld after retiring.

“He got really involved with the story and wanted to make sure that Tom was properly looked after in retirement. Ever since then he’s been really passionate about animal welfare, particularly horses.

“He has done a number of fundraising activities including an abseil and a bike ride from Devizes to HorseWorld’s site in Bristol.

“This is the first fundraising event that both Alfie and Charlie will do together, which is exciting.

“They both wanted to do it as soon as they heard about it. I wasn’t sure if they would be allowed to do it due to their age but the organisers said it will be fine if they’re with an adult.

“My husband, Martin, and I are both very proud of them. It’s not an average thing for young children to do. I thought it was a one-off at first but they keep on going.”

HorseWorld, Alfie’s favourite charity, rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes animals that have been abandoned, neglected or ill-treated.

The marina jump on Sunday, August 14, will see the two boys will join a team of 25 fellow horse lovers to jump into the water one-by-one before being saved by Newfoundland rescue dogs.
