WILTSHIRE has a vibrant and thriving music scene, covering all genres: Nancy Kerr, winner of six coveted Folk Awards from BBC Radio 2 and one of the most celebrated folk musicians of her generation, plays the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon next Friday (October 7).

A fiddler and singer-songwriter of rare style, she is respected for her interpretations of traditional folk. Kerr’s emergence as a writer has drawn comparisons to William Blake in her reawakening of a radical folk mythology as a backdrop for contemporary narratives about love and conflict, migration, hardship and jubilation, and the tensions between rural and urban life.

Nancy returns to Wiltshire Music Centre with a stellar line-up of folk musicians, James Fagan (guitar/bouzouki, Cara Dillon, The James Bros), Tom Wright (drums, Albion Band, Eliza Carthy), Tim Yates (double bass, Blackbeard’s Tea Party, Albion Band) and Rowan Rheingans (fiddle, Lady Maisery, the Rheingans Sisters) for a sensational night of folk music.

The set features tracks from her new album Instar. Finding herself increasingly fascinated by the role of the environment as a character in music, literature, art and film, Nancy’s new compositions explore the themes of human/ecological interaction that lie just beneath the surface of so many traditional folk songs. The lore and language of nature provide a repertoire of raw, universal images with which to address subjects such as gender identity, human rights, migration, colonialism, austerity and love.

Wiltshire Music Centre is a purpose-built, 300-seat concert hall, founded 18 years ago by a group of visionary local people, who realised that there was a serious need for top quality performance and rehearsal facilities in the area. Built with one of the first Arts Council awarded National Lottery grants for capital projects, is not hosts more than 90 concerts a year featuring world-class classical, folk, jazz and world music artists
