MAGICAL characters from Roald Dahl’s books were brought to life at Newtown Primary on Friday as pupils dressed up to celebrate the life of the author.

From the BFG to oompa loompas, both children and staff at the Trowbridge school took great pride in dressing up as some of their favourite heroes from Roald Dahl’s tales after learning about the books for the past term.

KS1 leader Sarah Ponsford said the entire school took part in the topic which was enjoyed by all.

She added: "It would have been the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl back in September and each class has studied certain texts and read certain stories and the younger children read The Enormous Crocodile, the middle children read James and the Giant Peach while the older ones studied Roald's life and read his autobiography.

"One thing that has come out of topic is that each and every child has been undoubtedly inspired by Roald Dahl. As a school we really wanted to give the children a book to go home with because we feel that this project has been important to their learning and they've got excited I'm coming in dressed as their favourite characters.

"The children have worked so hard and I think because it has been a whole school topic, it has been lovely to see the children share something their learning about and enjoying.”

The project formed part of the school’s year of reading which aims to encourage pupils to pick up books more frequently as well as discover their own love of reading and writing.

Mrs Ponsford added: "Through the Roald Dahl day we've said to them that they can find magic wherever they look especially when they sit back and relax with a book.

"Books are amazing and especially with Roald Dahl as everything is so magical and there is so many lovely stories that there is one for everyone."
