HUNDREDS of people filled the streets of Westbury to take part in the festive Christmas street fair and see the town illuminated with this year’s Christmas light switch on.

Up to 500 people attended the annual Westbury street fair on Saturday, starting at 10am the fair boasted a number of different stalls, from crafts to charities, there was something for everyone over the course of the day.

Verity Bartlett, events coordinator for Westbury Town Council, said: “There was a lot of entertainment for everyone who came along for the fair. We had Kirsty Clinch perform a couple of sets, we had a magician who was doing balloon magic, which was very popular, and we had a reindeer.”

Later on in the evening, the winner of the mayor’s Christmas card design competition was the lucky one to hit the switch and light up Westbury High Street.

“This year five-year-old Lucy Firth was the one to turn the lights on because she won the Christmas card competition. She was a very excited little girl. Between 500 and 600 people were all there to watch the lights turn on,” added Miss Bartlett.

There was a small disappointment for the Town Council after one of the main attractions was unable to make it to the event.

“The only disappointment was the racing ferrets, which couldn’t make it as the vehicle they were travelling in broke down. Apart from that everything went really well, we had Father Christmas on his float from 6pm in the High Street. It was a good way to start Christmas for the town,” said Miss Bartlett.
