RESIDENTS of Imberwood Close in Warminster got a shock over the weekend after a car came off the neighbouring road and crashed into the wall of a ground floor flat.

The incident took place on Sunday (December 4) when a silver Seat Leon collided with the building in Imberwood Close. When police arrived at 5.45pm they found the empty car resting on its side, having gone down the embankment from Woodcock Road and come to rest against the building.

Diane Oliver, who lives next door to the crash site, said: “I was sitting in my front room and I heard a loud bang so I decided to take my dog for a walk and see what was going on. I have lived here for 16 years and I only found out the other day that it wasn’t the first time it has happened.

"It is really bizarre. There was a crowd gathering around it, I am surprised the driver didn't impale themselves on the fence. People drive down Woodcock Road so quickly, you just see them speeding down through.

Other neighbours said that the sound of the crash was similar to a firework going off.

Peter Buocz, of Imberwood Close, said: "I didn't see the crash but I heard a big bang like it was a firework going off. I had a look outside and there were police and fire engines there."

Now Warminster Town Council plans to tackle the issue and has started to look at a possible 20mph plan for the roads in Warminster to try and prevent such accidents from happening regularly.

Councillor Steve Dancey, who represents Warminster East Ward, said: "Obviously that road has a lot of young men driving down too quickly, I don't want to point the finger because it isn't all of them but it does usually seem to be young men speeding down there.

"I think we are going to be coming up with proposals for 20 miles per hour limits in Warminster after the next election. We had put this idea forward to the people living in the Copheap Lane area during the bi-election and they were very happy with the idea."

BLOB Lewis Ayres, 21, from North Humberside, was later arrested and charged with drink-driving. He has been bailed to attend Chippenham Magistrates Court on December 22.
