STAFF at Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley are celebrating after receiving an Outstanding rating in their latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission.

The hospice, just off of the Bradford Road, was handed the highest possible rating by the inspector, placing it in the top six per cent of adult social care providers in the country. The care home’s last inspection in 2013 found that it met all of the standards set by the CQC.

John Davies, 58, chief executive of Dorothy House, said: "We are delighted, I think it covers the whole team including our head office in Winsley, our outreach centres in Peasedown and Trowbridge and the marketing and fundraising team. I think the CQC report highlighted our work isn't just with the patients, it's with the carers, families and children of the patients and the support we provide them."

The inspection took place in September and October, including three day visits to the hospice in Winsley and the outreach centres in Trowbridge and Peasedown St John. The inspectors assessed patients’ personal care records and then spoke to patients, carers, family members and staff as well as measuring the hospice’s performance.

"We heard ten days ago that we had received an Outstanding in four of the five categories and then had to wait before we were allowed to say anything publicly. I think it proves to anyone that has either run the London Marathon or donated a cheque that the investment has been well used. To think, for every pound we are given we have to raise a further four to provide our care. The report shows we are a caring and highly professional outfit," added Mr Davies.

In the report is states that the hospice does outstanding work supporting children and young people facing bereavement to cope with the changes in their lives and that staff developed exceptionally positive, caring and compassionate relationships and treated people with kindness, caring, dignity and respect.

In the report it reads: “People, relatives and healthcare professionals consistently praised the excellent standards of care, treatment and support provided by hospice staff.

“The hospice used a best practice assessment tool which helped people to self-report their physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. This helped staff identify and check they were meeting the needs that most mattered to people.”
