RESIDENTS of a Melksham care home have been transported around the world from the comfort of their own armchairs.

The Brookside care home in Ruskin Avenue, run by The Orders of St John Care Trust, has been taking part in a ‘virtual’ cruise around the world.

Care home manager Jamie Carter said: “The 40 residents have been ‘visiting’ parts of the world from the comfort of their home.

At each port of call, staff have been decorating the home with pictures, flags and bunting from the specific country.

“In addition, the Brookside activities team have dressed up in local costume, served local drinks and played music throughout the day which is traditional to the country being visited.

“It’s been a real adventure for the residents and everyone really gets into the spirit.

“On December 8, they arrived at their final destination and docked in Iceland, where there was a winter wonderland theme, with penguins, polar bears and icebergs!”

The team also hosted a Captain’s Table lunch and invited 12 children from the Forest & Sandridge Primary School to bring to the home their information about ancient Greece.

Prior to Winter Wonderland, the residents have ‘visited’ Spain, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Australia , Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, New York and Canada.

Some 15 family members and friends who have helped with decorating the home for each of the destinations also attended the event last Friday to enjoy the entertainment.

Jamie added: “It’s been a really great opportunity for the residents to still experience the world even though they’re able to get out as much as they used to.”
