THE mayor of Westbury has passed on the baton after his year in office has come to an end.

Councillor Gordon King has stepped down from his position of Westbury mayor as Independent Cllr Ian Cunningham was elected to take over.

In a meeting on Monday night Cllr King handed over his chains to Cllr Cunningham.

He said: “It is a great honour to be elected as the mayor of Westbury.

“I have been a councillor for six years now, and I am very excited to be given this role and am looking forward to the year ahead.”

Cllr King said: “Ian is the right choice for our next Westbury mayor.

“He has the right profile for the job and is one of the few councillors who work as hard in the community as in the council.

“I have enjoyed being Westbury mayor and have so many people to thank, including all the wonderful staff at Westbury Town Council.”

Labour’s Cllr Michael Sutton took over as deputy mayor.
