Teen jailed for knife attack

A TEENAGER has been jailed for three years and seven months for slashing a man’s face, leaving him needing 20 stitches.

Stuart Mansell, 19, of Portway Lane in Warminster, was high on drink and drugs when he launched the vicious attack on the acquaintance in his own home.

Lynne Henderson, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court on Friday how Mansell had gone to Lee Franklin’s flat in Warminster on October 17, 2007, to try and obtain cannabis.

She said Mansell was no more than an acquaintance to Mr Franklin who didn’t want to answer the door to him.

After calling at the communal door the defendant yelled, ‘Let me in, open this door now’.

He tried to calm him down and they went through to his flat where Mansell asked him for some cannabis.

Mr Franklin told him he did not have any, to which Mansell replied, ‘You liar,’ and became angry and agitated.

He was holding his hair and pulling at it with both hands and hitting himself on the top of the head.

The court was told he then asked for a knife to cut his hair with and despite being told there wasn’t one found a penknife in the kitchen.

He then started wielding it towards Mr Franklin and a 17 year old who was also in the flat, before pinning down the younger man and threatening him.

The youngster was in fear for his life before Mansell turned his attention elsewhere giving him the chance to escape from the flat.

Mansell then turned his attention to Mr Franklin and cut his face from the below the left corner of the cheekbone.

As a result of the attack the court heard the victim had to undergo an operation under general anaesthetic.

Mansell admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court heard he had a history of violent offending, including beating a man with a police baton in Warminster Park.

Michael Cullum, defending, said his client accepted he was facing a lengthy jail term having never experienced custody before.

He said Mansell had experienced a ‘terrible upbringing’ and suffered the loss of his grandmother, a relationship had broken down and he lost his job at the time.

Since the offence a few months after his 18th birthday, he said his client had not committed any further offences.

He said he now knew that if he took cannabis it would not help his depression, but exacerbate it.

Judge Mark Horton said: “You attacked the victim in his own home in an unprovoked attack with a knife causing a serious and permanent injury to his face which requires 20 stitches with which he will live for the rest of his life.”

The last 2 stories of violent abuse in Warminster have both included a paragraph detailing a sob story from the offender. Although it is sad to lose a loved one, or break up with a partner etc, it does not give you the right to go out and attack people with iron bars or knifes; or any means of weaponry come to that. It's no excuse and should not come into question when a judge is deciding the length of a custodial sentence. Agree with Turnip, 2 down - sadly however there's countless more to go.

I disagree with your comments entirely. This attack was wrong that is true but whom the attacker attacked was no angel either he was a scum bag who sold drugs to children this crime is much worse than the one inflicted on him , the offender had depression the drug dealer preys on people like this he just picked one who was too strong for him! I live in Warminster and I know plenty of people who buy drugs off the so called victim, he has ruined lives of good kids and that crime won’t go unpunished. As for Stuart his crime was wrong and he knows that, but at least it wasn’t an innocent person. As for the comment towards the offender by (the turnip) you have no right to call a 19 year old boy who you don’t know a waster, he happens to be an extremely bright boy who made one or two mistakes we didn’t all have the golden spoon , he made a few mistakes whereas Mr. Franklin carries on his mistakes with intent to make money for himself when you’re in the drug lifestyle expect nothing less than to get stabbed in the back as most users realise you are scum and will come for you as a prison sentence won’t do... don’t believe everything you read in the paper that’s all I can say!!!

There's a couple of flaws in this; first the date on this is wrong. It was the 17th December, not October. Secondly the statements made did not add up; some said the 17th December whereas others said the 16th December. It really can't be both. Finally, on here it says "Lee Franklin" whereas the statements say "Lee Franklyn". Who is getting this wrong?

Also, you should not judge someone when you don't know them. Lee Franklyn must have known the effects of drugs, and as another user said above, he was selling them to children and keeps doing it today. Stuart is reformed and has really pulled himself up.

And, if other users wish death on others, doesn't that make them just as bad, or worse? You should be ashamed of yourselves. You could never put yourself in anyone else's shoes because you're just too selfish.
