YOUNGSTERS at a west Wiltshire school had a whale of a time as they watched their boats, made out of yoghurt pots, lolly sticks and pop bottles, set sail.
Pupils from Princecroft Primary School, in Princecroft Lane, Warminster, headed to the paddling pool in Warminster’s town park to sail their boats made out of recycled items, as part of the school’s shipwrecked project.
Town and district councillor Keith Humphries, who watched the ships launch on Wednesday, said: “The whole school turned up to the paddling pool to see which boats sunk and which ones didn’t. They had a whale of a time.
“It was quite interesting really. As well as the shipwrecked project, there were lots of other social skills that they picked up.
“It was lovely to watch, everyone was joining in and that was the point.”
Classrooms at Princecroft have been transformed into desert islands complete with palm trees and shipwrecks as part of the school’s art, design and technology project.
Carole Godfrey, headteacher, said: “The topic was launched though a whole school drama experience where children and staff were shipwrecked on a tropical island, complete with natives.
“To develop skills in design and technology, each child designed and made a boat which was then launched in the town park.
“I would like to thank Councillor Keith Humphries for his help in making our boat launch such a success.”
