Tests at recycling centre conclude

TESTS on contaminated land at the Warminster Household Recycling Centre in Furnax Lane have been completed ahead of schedule.

Engineers commissioned by Wiltshire County Council began working around the clock drilling bore holes at the start of last week.

The work was needed because the site has been identified as contaminated due to its historic use housing a gas works.

The county council, as current owner, is responsible for dealing with the contamination. The tests will help establish the level of contamination. Following the week of drilling boreholes there will be a further two months of gas monitoring.

Through careful planning the council was able to keep the recycle centre open to the public during the work. By working at night the engineers managed to complete what was needed in four days – a day earlier than expected.

Andy Conn, waste services manager at Wiltshire County Council, said: “This was essential work but we know how many people rely on the recycling centre. I am pleased we managed to minimise disruption to residents and those using the site and I thank them for their co-operation.”

In the longer term the county council plans to open a new HRC at the highways depot close to the present site.

The aim is to have the new site open and working before the old site is permanently closed to keep the transition smooth for people using the recycling centre.

A planning application has now been submitted. It is expected to come before Wiltshire County Council in February.
