Edward's delight at Trowbridge civic award

The great and the good of Trowbridge were honoured at the annual civic dinner and dance held in the Civic Hall on Friday night.

The Civic Award, which is presented to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the community, was presented to Edward Jones.

The 73-year-old from Clarendon Avenue has been involved with many local groups, including the Citizens Advice Bureau, the Yerbury Almshouses, the Halve Social Centre and the Trowbridge Probus Club.

He said: “I just had not got a clue that it was happening or that I had even been nominated.

“I have been involved in the town doing various things of a voluntary nature for a long time and somebody obviously thought it was worth recognition.

“I never sought it, but I feel very honoured and very humbled to receive it.”

Mr Jones worked at the CAB from 1975 to 2000 where he was an advisor and also the management committee secretary.

He said the CAB is as relevant today as when it was set up just before the Second World War.

He was also trustee and clerk to the trustees of the Yerbury Almshouses and was involved in selling them off when they were no longer viable and donating the proceeds to the Lady Brown Almshouses in Polebarn Road.

Mr Jones runs The Halve Social Centre as a member of the Guild of Community Service and is also a member of the Probus Club in Trowbridge.

The Town Enhancement Award went to Peter Brett Associates for its enhancement project on the town bridge.

Nick Dixon, of Peter Brett Associates, said: “We were pleased to be nominated, but were delighted to win.”

Also honoured at the event was Canon Christopher Brown, who is retiring after spending 25 years as the vicar of St James’ Church, and town crier Trevor Heeks, who turned 65 on Tuesday and had a surprise visit from two fellow town criers.
