A trophy presented by his family in memory of a Melksham cricket player and coach has been presented to a promising young cricketer at Beanacre Cricket Club.
Owen Lewis, 41, a father-of-three, was a former secretary, player and youth coach at Beanacre Cricket Club. He was found dead at his flat in Bath Road, Melksham, on March 20.
The club was approached by Mr Lewis’ father Roy, who lives in Lincoln, shortly after his death about establishing an annual trophy in his son’s memory.
Mr Lewis, who provided funding for the trophy, said: “The idea was raised by his brothers and sister and we developed it from there.”
Club chairman Phil McMullen said the trophy will now be awarded each year to the most promising young player.
He said: “The trophy was donated by the family of Beanacre’s former player and coach, who tragically died this year, with the specific request that it should commemorate Owen’s hard work with the youth of Melksham and district.”
Mr McMullen said Mr Lewis had a strong sense of family values and put a lot of hard work into promoting youth cricket.
On Friday night the trophy was awarded to Josh Stanley, who was deemed to be the most deserving young player for the 2009 season, at a presentation evening in the pavilion on the King George V Playing Fields in Melksham, where the club is based.
Josh, aged eight, has been playing with the club for four years Roy Lewis said: “It is pleasing that the award is up and running and I hope that the first winner is able to fulfil his early talent and enjoy his cricket for years to come. Owen would have been very pleased.”
