Chamber wades in to help local firm's bid to move

Melksham Chamber of Commerce is urging people to take part in a survey on its website to support a local firm’s bid to move premises.

The Countrywide Farmers store in Bradford Road is waiting for a decision on its application to move to an adjoining site, where its redundant grain mill is located, so its land can be turned into an Asda superstore.

Wiltshire Council is expected to make a decision within the next month.

Melksham Chamber of Commerce has set up the online survey to show, what they say, is the strength of feeling about the application and are asking people to visit their site.

Wiltshire Council’s policy department said in its response to the planning application that the site was unsuitable and the firm could easily move to Trowbridge or Chippenham.

President Graham Ellis said: “We believe that refusing permission would be detrimental to the town centre, as it would encourage people from the surrounding countryside to shop in Chippenham or Trowbridge “But the chamber of commerce wants to represents its members, and then Melksham's general business interest, so we're running a quick survey on our new website and encouraging everyone to vote.

“We have also circulated a newsletter to all the traders in the town centre.”

He added that voting on the website had so far been unanimous that the plan should be given permission For more information visit http://www.melkshamchamber.org.uk
