Brokerswood horse owner alerted to blaze

A horse owner was woken in the middle of the night by a call from police telling her that a blaze had broken out in a barn filled with straw near where she keeps her animals.

Dilys Van Tromp, who rents a field for her five ponies at Brokerswood Farm, near Westbury, arrived at the scene shortly after 4am on Friday to find two fire crews from Trowbridge and a water carrier from Wilton tackling the blaze in the barn, which contained 200 tonnes of straw.

“When I first got there I thought ‘oh my God, the horses’, but it was OK,” she said. “There was nothing I could do. The horses were safe so I came back.

“The barn is completely written off. It’s terrible and it stinks up there.”

A fourth fire crew, from Westbury, arrived later that morning followed several hours later by crews from Melksham and Warminster.

The blaze is believed to have been started deliberately and police are investigating.
