The sad thing is you belittling their efforts."

History buffs to help heroes by hosting fundraiser in Trowbridge shopping centre

A group of military history buffs will be dressing as the Home Guard and dealing with an “unexploded bomb” in The Shires shopping centre in Trowbridge this weekend.

Members of the newly-formed Home Guard Chippenham 1st Battalion (Re-enactment group) will be collecting money for Help for Heroes in all their gear.

They will be in the shopping centre in their uniforms, along with a sentry box and home-made 600lb papier mache “bomb”.

Brian Hinton, from the group, said: "Help For Heroes rang us about fundraising in Asda, standing there with a bucket. I didn’t like being invisible so I said we’re part of a historical re-enactment group and we’re trying to put something together.

"Hopefully it will attract people to come and have a look and put some pennies in the bucket."

The group, which chose to emulate the Home Guard Chippenham as they were the county’s first Home Guard unit, will be in the centre from 9am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-3pm on Sunday.

They also plan to allow children to take photos in the senty box in return for donations.
