Businessman appears in court charged with attempted murder of Westbury solicitor

Property developer Michael Chudley appeared at Salisbury Magistrates' Court this morning charged with the attempted murder of Devizes solicitor, Jim Ward.

Chudley, 62, is also charged with threats to kill, possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence and carrying a firearm with criminal intent.

Chudley spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth and told the magistrates he had no fixed address. He appeared dishelleved and had marks under his eyes. He was not asked to enter a plea and the case was adjourned to July 18 at Winchester Crown Court. Chudley was remanded in custody.

Mr Ward, 58, was shot in the head at his offices in Morris Goddard and Ward in St John’s Street, Devizes, on Monday afternoon. He is being treated for life threatening injuries at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol.
