The winners of this year’s Bradford in Bloom competition put in a flowerful display despite the bad weather. Bradford on Avon Town Council said this year’s competition was a blooming success and has enhanced the town’s appearance.

The results of the competition, which featured entries from residents, businesses and schools, were announced at the council offices, in Bradford on Avon, last Wednesday, and the gardeners were given their trophies.

Mayor John Potter, who has previously won the competition’s best vegetable garden category, said: “Given the absolutely shocking weather we’ve had for much of this year it has been a great effort by everyone who has entered the competition, let alone those who won.

“There were some wonderful displays in the town which have really caught the eye and it was a great honour, as a former prize winner myself, to hand out the prizes.”

One of the 17 winners dotted throughout the town was The Three Gables, in St Margaret’s Street, which scooped top spot in the best pub or restaurant external floral display section of the competition.

Vito Scaduto, who runs the 16th- century restaurant, is proud that its Bradford in Bloom entry, which included impatiens and bacopas, was recognised.

He said: “This is the first time we’ve entered the competition and we are really pleased to have done so well. This beautiful building is on the main road and everyone who drives through Bradford on Avon sees it, so it is only right that it looks appealing.”

Another person whose entry blossomed into a winner was Penny Hopwood whose display at her Rosemary Walk home won the best overall display.

She said: “I’m just over the moon and really thrilled. We entered a colour themed display featuring whites, red, blue and yellow flowerbeds.

“This is a great hobby and it is very nice to have been part of the competition.”
