A new club is hoping to revitalise the old pub game of cribbage by coupling it with the more modern pub classic of curry.

The Curry and Crib Club, based at the Sir Isaac Pitman in Castle Place, is bringing the two together in the hope it can become a regular fixture.

Crib player Brian Hinton, one of the organisers of the group, said: “I used to play in a league and it seems there isn’t a league any more that I know of. “We were discussing this in the Sir Isaac Pitman and how it would be nice to have an evening of not just curry, but curry and crib.”

The pub agreed to give it a go and the new club had a launch on July 26 with a second evening due this week.

Mr Hinton, who has been playing the game since the age of 10, said: “We had a few people come down, tentatively have a look and play a game and now we’re hoping a lot more people will come along and we can set up a round robin or knockout game.

“It’s a great game, it’s one of those things that your parents teach you, or did. We want it to become a regular thing, you don’t always want to go every week, but if you fancy it you can have a game and a meal, mix and match it.

Players of all ages and experience are welcome, and Mr Hinton said he hoped the idea would take off and the club might even be able to start fundraising for Help For Heroes and CLIC Sergant, the Sir Isaac Pitman’s two nominated charities.
