Man crushed by steamroller in Colerne

A man aged 56 died after being crushed by the steamroller he was driving near to a farm in Bath Road, Colerne, at 8.23am yesterday.

It is believed the man, who lived locally, fell out of the front of the vehicle and was run over by it.

A rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and a nearby paramedic attended the incident but the man died at the scene. 

A police spokesman said the man's family have been informed but formal identification has not yet been completed.

The spokesman added: "The Health and Safety Executive have been informed and inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death are on-going."

Pity the Gazette cannot get the headline correct. As 'blackstone' says, you can't fall off the front of a steam roller. I have been informed that it was a diesel road roller that was involved belonging to a national firm. I know this does not alter the fact that sadly a man was killed, but the facts reported should be correct.

For us non-roadmen, what's the difference other than the method of propulsion and why is the diesel variety easier to fall from (which I infer from your comment).
In defence of the headline, I belIeve the term steam roller is still largely used by non-roadmen whatever the propulsion method.

I think it would be fair to say the term steamroller is still widely used regardless of the method of propulsion. Obviously the writer of this article agrees; and I would hazard a guess that it wasn't a young child.
