Swimmers return to heros welcome
Members of Trowbridge Amateur Swimming Club believe that Aaron Moores’s silver medal win at London’s Aquatics Centre could inspire more people to join.
The 18-year-old speedy swimmer, who has learning disabilities, captured his first Paralympic medal when he took silver in the S14 men’s 100m backstroke race at the 2012 Games.
Aaron has been a member of Trowbridge ASC since he was 10 and the club believes his success and the participation of clubmate Chloe Davies, 13, at the Games will bring more people to the pool.
Sarah Hill, its minutes secretary, said: “Loads of people from the club have been watching him and Chloe Davies compete at the Paralympics.
“I’m sure their performances will inspire local people to come forward and join the club.”
The club’s committee is now discussing the best way of honouring the two swimmers and is delighted that Aaron is bringing a Paralympic medal back home to Trowbridge.
Rob Griggs, welfare officer at Trowbridge ASC, said: “We’ve known Aaron for a number of years and seen him develop and we are incredibly proud of him.”
Trowbridge ASC has about 400 swimmers, of all abilities, coming to sessions at Trowbridge swimming pool, as well as other pools locally. On Tuesday, Aaron returned home after being part of the Olympic and Paralympic parade of 800 Team GB and Paralympics GB competitors.
The Wiltshire College student was welcomed back to his house, in Lamb Ale Green, with a huge banner and flags as he celebrated his achievement with his friends and relatives.
His grandmother, Maria Hanko, of Blair Road, Trowbridge, said she was thrilled with her grandson’s performance at London 2012. She said: “I think he has done very well and worked very hard and deserved what he has achieved.”
Wiltshire College student Aaron will be taking a motor vehicle course at the Trowbridge campus this academic year.
Robert Rees, the college’s vice-principal, said: “We are extremely proud and in awe of Aaron’s achievement at the Paralympics and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to Wiltshire College as he progresses with his studies.”
