Warminster-based battalion to be given freedom of town

Warminster  town councillors have awarded 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment the Freedom of the Town, to strengthen bonds between the unit and the community.

The battalion has been based in Battlesbury Barracks in Woodcock Road for seven years, and could remain there for a further decade at least.
At a meeting on Monday night councillors voted unanimously to grant the honour, which allows 3 Yorks to parade ‘with colours flying, bayonets fixed and bands playing’.
 

Mayor Rob Fryer said: “We have been thinking about this for a long time but needed the right opportunity and the return of the battalion from Afghanistan seemed the time. Warminster has a close connection with the military, with many ex-servicemen settled here, and have been very supportive of 3 Yorks.

“They have brought many benefits to the town, not least that service personnel are often very active and open minded people, which helps to make Warminster the place it is today.”

The ceremonial freedom will be awarded before 3 Yorks’ return parade in November.

*  A fundraising concert featuring the town’s Army Wives’ Choir will be held at the Minster Church next Saturday, September 29. Money raised will go to the 3 Yorks Benevolent Fund. Tickets are available from the Civic Centre, Weymouth Arms, Organ Inn, The Anchor, and the 3 Yorks Welfare Office.
