Yobs strike at landmark
3:00pm Friday 21st September 2012 in Latest News
BRADFORD on Avon Town Council are appealing to yobs who keep vandalising landmarks in the town’s Victory Field to show a little respect.
Over the weekend, railings and concrete steps were ripped out of the ground, with damage expected to cost hundreds of pounds to repair.
It follows a number of incidents of vandalism in recent years, including to the pavilion, which have cost the town council more than £1,000 to fix.
Town councillor Isabel Martindale, chairman of the Bradford on Avon Sports Association, said: “This frustrates me so much, as the actions of the minority are having a big effect on the taxpayer as we keep on having to pay for issues out of our control.
“I cannot think how we can create a deterrent to stop this kind of thing from taking place in the future. As a town we’ve had a great summer because of the Olympic Torch Relay coming to Bradford on Avon and Ed McKeever’s gold medal win and you’d hope that would create civic pride.”
A plaque commemorating the hard work of the sports association’s previous chair Ken Evill, who died in February last year, is due to be unveiled at the pavilion. The ceremony may now be postponed until after the repairs.
