Audit locates ‘missing’ lot of morphine

An investigation begun after ampoules of morphine were reported missing from an ambulance station has revealed the drugs had not been counted in stocktaking.

The alarm was raised in August, after several ampoules went ‘missing’ from Trowbridge Ambulance Station and police were contacted. A full audit located the missing drugs.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “In the interests of patient and staff safety, we have robust systems in place for safeguarding vital items, such as controlled drugs.

“These include notifying relevant partner organisations, as early as possible, in the event of any discrepancies. A small number of morphine ampoules were unaccounted for and this was reported while an investigation was carried out. “The ampoules have now been located and all daily stock checks across Wiltshire since have been accurate.”

A report will be given to the board on October 23.
