Performers have a Secret to tell
The cast of Trowbridge Operatic
The cast of Trowbridge Operatic

VISITORS to Great Chalfield Manor near Melksham took a step back in time this week as the National Trust house became the setting for a children's classic set in 1911.

Trowbridge Amateur Operatic staged a photocall with the cast in costume depicting the era for their forthcoming production The Secret Garden.

The play, based on the children's story by Frances Hodgson Burnett, follows the personal journey of Mary Lennox, an orphan, as she travels from India to her uncle's isolated country house in Yorkshire.

The only person who has any time for the little girl is chambermaid, Martha, who tells Mary about a walled garden.

While exploring the grounds, Mary discovers the key to the garden and unearths the secrets of the old house.

Joan Francis, of the Operatic Society, said: "Every now and then a new musical comes along which inspires everyone fortunate to be involved. All areas of the show have proved to be very challenging."

Show director Paul Butler added: "This production promises to be an outstanding show."

The show runs at Trowbridge Civic Hall runs from Tuesday May 20-24. Tickets for the show are available at Trowbridge Information Centre.

Was there when they were filming the other Boleyn girl with that siren Scarlett J. It is a great place and it was good to see it made up with Tudor scenes, horsemen and stalls etc, really made it feel like olden times.

Worth a visit for sure.
