Crew cut for ex Navy man

WHEN Phil Seaman left the Navy two years ago he vowed he would never be forced to have a crew cut again.

But after a close friend died of cancer he decided he would put his lengthy locks to good use and have them shaved off and donated to Cancer Research UK instead.

On Saturday Mr Seaman, 52, sat in the hairdresser's chair at Salon Excel in Hilperton and watched his locks fall to the floor.

His wife Julie said: "He was in the Navy for 34 years but he came out two years ago and started growing his hair. "He says it's blond, but I think it's grey."

When Mr Seaman's friend, golfing partner and colleague at Paradigm Services in Corsham, Allan Dunbar, died from cancer of the oesophagus, he decided to do something in his memory.

Mrs Seaman said: "He decided to shave off his hair to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice and donate the hair to Cancer Research UK so it can be made into a wig.

"Our son and I think it's fab because we don't like the long hair. When you've been married to an officer and a gentleman and then they turn into Keith Miller from EastEnders it's not good!"

The hair cutting ceremony took place on Saturday, which coincided with the first birthday of Salon Excel. Mr Seaman's hair was divided into bunches and each one was cut off so it could be easily sent off to Cancer Research UK to be made into a wig.

Mr Seaman's wife and Mr Dunbar's widow Bernie each cut off one of the bunches and they held a raffle with prizes from Knees, Master Shoe and Castle Street Clinic in Trowbridge among others.

It took almost half an hour to shave Mr Seaman's head and he raised just over £1,500 for Dorothy House in doing so.
