POLICE are warning bank customers to be vigilant after another suspected incident of card cloning at a west Wiltshire cashpoint.

A Trowbridge man found large amounts of cash had been withdrawn from his account shortly after using a cashpoint in the town.

Martin Hill, 36, of Downside Park, used the middle cash point at Tesco's in County Way, Trowbridge, on Friday August 1 to withdraw cash.

But £300 was withdrawn the next day from a cashpoint in London and the same amount the following day too, also in London.

The card was cancelled when the thieves tried to take money out on Monday August 4 too but found there were insufficient funds in Mr Hill's account.

He said: "I remember someone standing fairly close behind me when I took the money out but I still have my card so they must have copied it.

"The bank said they will investigate it but it will take a minimum of two weeks. "And I won't get a refund until they have investigated it.

"Thankfully I have got family and friends who can help me out but it's just not a very nice thing to happen because we are having to borrow money from someone else."

Mr Hill reported the incident to the police and Tesco's as soon as he found out and the police are investigating it, but they have not yet had any other incidents of cards being cloned from the same machine reported to them.

Last month a card skimmer was found attached to a cashpoint in Asda in The Shires shopping centre, Trowbridge. The machine had a camera attached, which records people typing in their PIN numbers and a card reader to record card numbers for cloning purposes.

Acting Inspector Matt Armstrong, of Trowbridge police, said: "Wiltshire Police continue to ask for vigilance from both the business and public community who operate or use ATMs.

"Following a very recent isolated report of a card being cloned in the Trowbridge area please check cash machines before using them for anything that looks out of place.

"If you do suspect something is wrong please call the police to allow us to investigate. "Always cover the key pad when entering your PIN number for security."
