Hundreds of calls have been received following a fresh appeal on BBC show Crimewatch for help in catching the killer of 25-year-old Bradford on Avon woman Melanie Hall.

More than 200 people called the dedicated incident room on Wednesday night with information, which police hope will provide the breakthrough needed to find Miss Hall’s killer.

During the show, presented by Kirsty Young and Rav Wilding, new information was revealed by detectives investigating Miss Hall’s murder, including the discovery of a set of three Ford car keys, found near junction 14 of the M5, close to where Miss Hall’s remains were discovered earlier this month.

Detective Superintendent Mike Courtier, who is leading the investigation for Avon and Somerset Police, said: “From the general appearance of the keys it is clear that they have been open to the elements for a considerable period of time.”

The keys relate to a Ford car made around 1995 to 1996. They are connected together with a black plastic tag, bearing the identification number T144213.

The number on the tag is known as a T Code and relates to technical data specific to the keys, but may not necessarily relate to one specific vehicle.

Miss Hall, who worked at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, was last seen at 1.10am at Cadillac’s nightclub in Bath.

During the show, Det Supt Courtier said: “We can’t rely on forensic evidence in this case and I am sure there are people out there who know what happened to Melanie.

“They know what happened to her in Cadillac’s nightclub and they know where she went and who she was with and how it was that she came to be left on the M5 by junction 14.”

During the episode, Miss Hall’s parents Steve and Pat, of Bradford Leigh, paid an emotional tribute to their murdered daughter.

Mr Hall said: “She was a very kind girl, always there ready to help people.

“She was a person slightly in the shadows; she was quite shy and she took a little time to get used to people but when she did she was a good friend.

"We now know that she was brutally beaten about the head, tied up in some bin bags and thrown away at the side of the motorway like a crisp packet and our focus now is very much on finding that person or persons responsible for that terrible act."

Workmen had been clearing in a ditch by the side of the Thornbury turn off of the M5 on October 5, when one worker, who was strimming the vegetation, found bones and an exposed skull.

During the excavations, police also discovered a patterned gold ring on one of the finger bones of the skeleton, the photos of which were shown to Mr and Mrs Hall, who confirmed the ring belonged to their daughter.

In the programme, Mrs Hall said: “My hands were shaking so much I could hardly hold it to look at but I think as soon as I saw it I realised it was Melanie’s. That’s hard to come to turns with really.

“I think probably over the first couple of years probably we did raise our hopes every time the police came to tell us that there might be some progress in the investigation but as the years go by there is no way we can function at that level every time somebody comes up with possible information.”
