Store director Martyn Thomas with the glasses collected
Store director Martyn Thomas with the glasses collected

STAFF at a Melksham opticians are celebrating a successful first year in business after handing over of more than 400 pairs of recycled glasses to charity.

Specsavers Opticians in Bank Street, opened 12 months ago, and has conducted more than 3,000 eye examinations, dispensed 4,000 pairs of specs and currently looks after 300 contact lens wearers.

In addition, the store has been busy collecting a mountain of old specs for the charity Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).

The glasses could potentially help to improve the sight of up to 400 people in developing countries.

VAO is a UK-registered charity dedicated to helping people in developing countries whose lives are blighted by bad eyesight, particularly in those cases where spectacles can help.

Store director Martyn Thomas said: "What better way to celebrate our first birthday than by offering support to those blighted by poor sight around the world.

"We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has already donated their unwanted specs to the store, but this is just the beginning and we hope to collect many more in the next 12 months too."

Vision Aid Overseas director Tym Marsh added: "I am thrilled by the support we are receiving from Specsavers in Melksham.

"We would like to encourage everyone to continue to help us by donating their old, unwanted specs and handing them in to staff at the store."
