Company wins Queen's Award

A MELKSHAM company is among the winners and recipients of The Queen's Awards for Enterprise announced today.

Bowerhill-based Checkmate UK Ltd, which employs 25 staff at Pegasus Way, Won an innovation award for the design and manufacture of pneumatic bracing bags for keeping marine cargos securely in place on the decks or in the holds of ships.

Following three years of research and development into rubber compounds and an upgrade of its manufacturing processes, the company offers robust bags, which have rapidly growing sales, and which are cheaper, safer and more durable than competitive products.

The Queen's Awards are the UK's most prestigious accolades for business-related achievement and a total of 139 business awards and 11 individual awards have been conferred this year.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "Queen's Award winning companies are standard-bearers for the very best of British business.

"These firms embody the spirit of enterprise and innovation that is so vital to the future of Britain's economy.

"Whether large or small, every one of this year's winning organisations has achieved outstanding success in its field. I congratulate them all on their diverse and remarkable achievements."
