A NEW library service run by young people will launch at Melksham Library next week.
HeadSpace, a partnership with young people and The Reading Agency aims to more people reading and will be officially launched on Tuesday with a performance by the band Switchback who are all pupils at nearby George Ward School.
The initiative is part of a national project funded by the Big Lottery and managed by The Reading Agency to provide environments in libraries and youth centres where young people are involved in the design, planning and running of their new spaces, where they can chill out and enjoy cutting-edge reading experiences.
Local young people have been at the heart of developing this visionary new approach to teenage library services in Wiltshire.
Among the innovative elements of the project is the idea of young people being served drinks and a book of their choice by a specially-trained volunteer book waiter.
Mary Douglas, Wiltshire County Council's cabinet member for culture, said: "We're working hard to reach out to all parts of our community and I believe HeadSpace will prove very popular with young people."

Melksham is on the look-out for young people aged 11 to 19 years who are interested in accredited volunteering opportunities in HeadSpace.
For more information please contact Jane Dunmow or Ros Meyer on 01225 702039 or come to the launch to find out more.
The addition to Melksham library comes only months after it re-opened following an extensive refurbishment. The £20,000-worth of work included new displays and improved layout, a café-style area to relax with a coffee or tea as well more books.
