Divers raise £4k for marine group

MORE than £4,000 was raised for the Marine Conservation Society through a 24-hour sponsored dive organised by a Melksham diving club at the weekend.

Almost 80 divers braved chilly seven degree Centigrade waters at Vobster Quay in Somerset for the event, which was organised by The Dive Zone at Avonside Enterprise Park.

The divers took it in turn to dive for up to an hour at a time over the 24-hours from Saturday to Sunday, amassing a total of 248 dives between them and using up 250,000 litres of air.

One diver managed to complete 25 dives in 24 hours.

Colin Eadie, manager of The Dive Zone, said: "It was awful weather, it poured down for the entire thing, but other than that it went really well.

"MCS is a charity that is really close to my heart - as it should be for any diver.

"MCS conservation projects tackle issues which directly affect us as divers - from pollution and the rubbish on our beaches, to the need for marine reserves and protection of basking sharks."

Vobster Quay pledged to donate a portion of all participants' entrance fees to MCS and gave free entry to anyone with more than £100 in sponsorship pledges.

Mr Eadie had also promised to shave off his hair if the fundraising target of £5,000 was met and although the event has so far raised just over £4,000. He added: "It looks like I've got away with it but if more money comes in I suppose I'll have to shave it off."
