Checkmate for pupil James
James Harwood

GEORGE Ward pupil James Harwood has proved himself to be a cut above the rest when it comes to chess.

Year 8 student James was crowned the school's chess champion for a second year in a row, racking up 21 points through seven victories.

He will go onto play in the Megafinals of the British Land UK Chess Challenge 2008, at Kingdown School in Warminster on June 7.

He will be joined by fellow George Ward pupils Dima Harrison and Tyler Pattenden, both Year 7, who also qualified for the next stage.

Meanwhile, press cadet Laura Lewis has started reporting for her school newspaper despite studying hard for her forthcoming GCSEs.

The Year 11 George Ward School pupil put pen to paper to scribe a review of the recent school production of The Little Shop of Horrors.

Laura, who is returning to the school for A-levels next year, is determined to forge a career in journalism.

Is that a chess piece he's holding?
