A CONTROVERSIAL plan to turn the site of a former garage in Melksham into affordable housing has won the backing of the town council.
Despite residents of Snarlton Lane turning up to object to the plans for the former CN Vines garage, the scheme was recommended for approval at a meeting on Monday evening.
Selwood Housing, formerly West Wiltshire Housing Society, submitted the application for 16 flats and associated works for the cork-shaped piece of land between Sandridge Road and Snarlton Lane.

Paul Walsh, of Selwood Housing, said they had met with neighbours and taken into account their concerns.
He said they had altered their plans so the existing hedgerow would be enhanced even more, the access onto Snarlton Lane had been removed and they would make a contribution to public open spaces in the area.
The committee recommended the plans be approved subject to the conditions that the hedgerow be dealt with first and that negotiations over the materials to be used continue.
